Rotary Pulse Jet Engine
by Dilip D James ©2002

Traditionally the race track has been the testing ground for new technologies which would later find applications in ordinary every day road use . Many of these technologies , have been implemented , for example double overhead cams , dual intake and exhaust valves and multiple point fuel ignition , this does not include the tremendous innovations in tyre technology , which enabled us to do away with snow chains , get improved mileage and a smoother ride. Yet many race track innovations have been virtually ignored by the everyday consumer market , included in this are Wankel engines , gas turbines and rocket engines. Here is an engine design that may change all that. This design is based on the tremendous potential energy inherent in an internal combustion engine. This design will give a mileage of 500mpg plus , even in heavy traffic conditions together with zero pollution .It is based on the experimentation and innovation of Robert Goddard , the American born inventor and innovator and father of the rocket age. In an age of dwindling fuel resources , conservation of fuel and environment is of paramount importance to all of us today. To start of let us examine the present situation viz-a-viz the IC piston engine , we find that it is only 20% efficient , even with all the innovations that have been implemented this figure does not look like appreciably improving , by contrast jet and rocket engines have an efficiency of 63 % , this in itself would be a huge improvement on the present day situation , since both turbines and rockets are zero pollution engines , yet the Rotary Pulse Jet Engine , which is described herein has the capacity of yielding unprecedented mileage as well as power . A brief description of this engine can be found at http://conceptengine.tripod.com/conceptengine/id2.html . For the unbelievers here is the potential yield of the engine.

  • Mass of fuel = 0.00176 lbs.
  • Velocity = 8000 ft/sec
  • RPS = 40 (revolutions per second )

  • Momentum = mv = 0.00176 x 8000 = 14.08 ft lbs.
  • In one revolution of the engine power = 4 x 14.08 = 56.32 ft lbs.
  • In one second @ 2400 rpm power = 40 x 56.32 = 2258.2 ft lbs.
  • Power generated in one second in Horse power = 2258.2 / 550 = 4.09 hp.

This is a tremendous amount of horse power equating to 255 hp @ 2400 rpm , when linked to a fly-wheel this extra energy can be fed into the fly-wheel and later drawn off for 45 to 60 seconds at a time thereby yielding the tremendous mileage earlier claimed.
